How Elon’s war with OpenAI became Anthropic’s biggest data center.

How Elon’s war with OpenAI became Anthropic’s biggest data center.

Your AI provider went down again this week, didn’t it?

Look at the chart — Anthropic over the last 30 days, pulled directly from its own status pages. Partial disruptions nearly every week. If you’re building anything serious on top of these models, your team’s internal status page probably looks the same.

Mine does.

I mapped my own workdays using the same format. Roughly 89% of the productivity variance correlated directly with upstream lab status.

This is the silent tax distorting agentic systems in production: retry logic, backoff strategies, circuit breakers, orchestration complexity, and engineering hours spent compensating for instability instead of building product value.

Today, that changed.

𝗘𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗸 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿.

Musk owns xAI — a direct competitor to Anthropic. He has spent years fighting OpenAI. And now Colossus 1 reportedly shifts into Anthropic’s orbit: 300+ MW, 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, coming online within weeks.

Either compute scarcity now overrides ideology and competitive instinct, or Elon hates OpenAI more than he competes with Anthropic.

Possibly both.

But the market signal is the same.

And today’s operational changes are not subtle:

▸ Claude Code 5-hour limits doubled ▸ Peak-hour throttling removed for Pro and Max ▸ Opus API rate limits increased significantly

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲:

Architectures previously dismissed as too compute-heavy are back on the table. Parallel agent orchestration starts becoming the default. Retry scaffolding starts becoming deletable code.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁:

Compute is the moat now.

Not models. Not UX. Not features.

The next 18 months will separate the labs that secured capacity years in advance from the ones still negotiating for it.

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

The winners of this phase will not necessarily be the labs with the cleanest values narrative or the loudest founder.

They will be the ones treating compute the way oil majors treat reserves: strategic, secured early, and locked down before competitors fully understood the constraint.

Reliability is a feature.

About time it started shipping like one.

What has your status page looked like this month?
